FAQ - Frequently asked questions about sanding and sealing parquet floors

When can parquet be sanded?

Your parquet floor can be sanded from a wear layer of three millimetres. This can be done up to three times during its service life. Solid parquet can be sanded more often without any problems. Depending on the wear and tear on the floor, renovation of the parquet is recommended after 15 to 20 years. With careful handling, a parquet floor can therefore last for many decades.

How long does it take to sand and seal parquet?

The duration of the repair depends entirely on the size of the parquet surface. For 30 to 40 square metres, you can expect about two days. On the first day, the surface is roughly and medium-fine sanded, on the second day it is finely sanded, varnished or oiled and polished. If the floor is also sealed, one more working day can be expected due to the drying time. For larger areas, a consultation is carried out on site in order to draw up a more precise schedule.

Can the floor be walked on during this time?

As long as the floor is being sanded, it can still be walked on. Walking on the floor is prohibited after the first sealant or primer has been applied. Wait at least 12 hours until the surface is completely dry after the final sealing. It can then be walked on carefully. Three sealing processes are necessary. After oiling, it is best not to walk on the floor for up to 48 hours.

Is it possible to extend the life of a parquet floor without sanding?

Sanding the floor can be delayed with the help of special floor cleaners. Using a suitable machine and cleaning agent, dirt can be removed from between the wood fibres of the parquet surface. The wood is then resealed or treated.

Cleaning is usually used for floors with a wear layer of less than 1.5 millimetres to prevent sanding. However, the process should only be used every 5 years or so.

What do I need to consider after the refurbishment?

After oiling, the floor must not be wiped with a damp cloth for 14 days - up to 5 days for sealing, depending on the lacquer. 2K lacquers can be wiped or walked on more quickly. In addition, no carpets, painter's fleece or other vapour-proof materials should be placed on the parquet or furniture placed on the parquet during this time.

What does dust-free sanding mean?

The wood dust produced during sanding is very fine. However, by extracting it with a special hoover during the sanding process, it does not get into the air or onto objects.

The coarse dust, which is mainly produced during the first two sanding steps, is immediately extracted by a powerful dual-motor hoover. The rooms are not clinically clean as a result, but are sanded largely dust-free. It is therefore no longer necessary to cover the fitted furniture, kitchen, etc.
